Restoration & Conservation

Restoration & conservation are related practices, but they have different goals and approaches. It is important to know the difference between the two and know which approach to take, this is normally dependant on the building itself.

  • Restoration – Involves efforts to completely return a building or structure to its original state.
  • Conservation—Focuses on preserving and preventing further deterioration to a building or structure.

The question of which approach is best is completely dependent on each individual building/structure as well as the condition of said building/structure. If something is past saving or becomes unsafe then there is no choice but to replace with new.

Quite often when we work on a property or structure, we use both approaches throughout the process making sure we use the right methods for each individual situation, contributing to the intended outcome.

Something to keep in mind if you own a period property is adding Value. It is estimated that a fully restored period property can have added value of up to 20%.

We always make sure when replacing stonework with new that we replace any original details like for like. Our highly skilled stonemasons can dress/carve to any specification.
