Stone Repairs & replacements

When to replace a stone or carry out a repair?

Knowing when to replace a stone or carry out a repair is important and with our knowledge and experience, we can advise you what is the best thing to do.

Stone replacements should be carried out when there is significant cracks or decay within the stone. Window stones for example have an important structural role within a building. Defects within these should be addressed as soon as possible.

Repairs can be carried out when damage/decay to the stone is minor and there isn’t a need to replace the stone completely. This is also dependant on what role the stone plays in the building’s structural build.

We carry out two different types of repairs. Indent repairs and mortar repairs, both have their place and to which method should be used is dependent on the stone/building.

Indent repair — Is when you very accurately/carefully cut out the affected area of the stone and install a small new section of stone with a mixture of lime slurry/epoxy resin/stainless steel dowls.

Mortar repair —Is when we scale back the affected area around 15-20mm to allow us to apply our lime-based repair mortar called Lithomex. After this is applied and set, we can then scrape back the repair and apply any detail that was there originally.
