North Berwick
Pillars

Case Study

We were approached by a private client in mid-2023 and asked to create a new entrance to their property. This was to include three new stone pillars with the house name carved into the right-hand side pillar, a post box built into the wall, an extension of the existing wall by 0.5 meter in height, moulded pier caps for tops of pillars, new wall panel to the left of the pillars.

There was an existing wall that needed to be demolished to make way for three new beautiful red sandstone pillars. We were given plan drawings to work from and the client showed us examples of the style of pillars they had in mind.

We then went on to design the pillars. After doing so and all was approved, we dressed all the stone in our workshop ready for onsite delivery.

The first thing we did when work commenced on site was demolish the necessary stretch of existing wall, making way for the new entrance to the property. It was then time to mark out where everything was going to go and dig the footings/pour foundations.

After the foundations were in place we started building the new stone pillars then allowing us to re-build the existing wall and tie it into the new pillars. (the existing wall was extended 0.5 meters in height)

There was a post box installed throughout this process allowing the clients to collect their mail from within their now enclosed private garden.

We built a new wall to the left of the pillars with new stone that was chosen to best match the local stone which is no longer quarried. (North Berwick Law stone).

After everything was built up to hight we finished off the top of the wall with half round saddle back coping stones which gave a really nice finish to the job and ties everything in very nicely. The contrast between the Law stone—Corsehill Red sandstone pillars and coping stone is just extremely appealing to the eyes. This was an amazing project for the team and fair to say we are over the moon with the end results and so are the clients.

We will be back on site at some point to re-point the lower part of the original existing wall, this will make things look even better.
