The brief

We were approached by a private client in mid-2023 to create a new entrance to their property. The work included three new stone pillars with the house name carved into the right-hand pillar, a post box built into the wall, a 0.5 metre height extension of the existing wall, moulded pier caps for the pillars, and a new wall panel to the left of the pillars.

An existing wall had to be demolished to make way for three new red sandstone pillars. We were given plan drawings to work from, and the client showed us examples of the style of pillar they had in mind. We then designed the pillars and, once everything was approved, dressed all the stone in our workshop ready for delivery.

On site

Work on site began with demolishing the necessary stretch of existing wall to make way for the new entrance. We then marked out where everything would go, dug the footings and poured the foundations. With the foundations in place we built the new stone pillars, then rebuilt the existing wall and tied it into the pillars, extending it by 0.5 metres in height. A post box was built in as we went, so the clients can collect their mail from within their now enclosed garden.

To the left of the pillars we built a new wall in stone chosen to best match the local North Berwick Law stone, which is no longer quarried. Once everything was up to height, we finished the top of the wall with half-round saddleback coping stones, which tie everything together.

The result

The contrast between the Law stone and the Corsehill red sandstone pillars and copes is extremely appealing. This was an amazing project for the team, and we – and the clients – are over the moon with the result. We will be back at some point to re-point the lower part of the original wall, which will make things look even better.
