R. French Stonemasonry

Case study

The Square, East Linton

First-floor window stonework brought back to life: new mullions, jamb replacements, indent repairs and a full lime re-point.

01

The survey

This property in East Linton got some much-needed TLC. After surveying the first-floor stonework, it was immediately clear that no maintenance had been carried out for many years. The mullion stones on both windows were only just holding on – this could have been a bad accident. The weathering was so severe that one small tap with the hammer and the whole stone came loose. These were replaced with new Witton Fell sandstone mullions.

Jambs and repairs

Most of the jamb stones on both windows were also in a bad state, with large cracks throughout. Five jamb stones were fully replaced, four had partial replacements (indent repairs) and the rest were repaired on the ingoes. The jambs had a checked mould with a stugged finish on the face, all dressed in our workshop before work began on site.

03

The result

Two fractured quoin stones were also replaced, along with a complete re-point in lime mortar and new sand mastic to the windows. The work has brought this part of the property back to life, ready to last another lifetime.
